Building viability into the fabric
of rural communities

Frontenac Municipal Services is a new utility company managing communal water and wastewater solutions in Frontenac County. Their ambition extends beyond infrastructure, using communal services to support rural growth while preserving the character, environment, and quality of life that define these communities.

We created a brand that shifted the conversation from water and wastewater toward a larger opportunity, sustainable viability for rural communities.

A complex service with a bigger problem

Communal services were still unfamiliar to many of FMS’s audiences. Developers, planners, engineers, and municipalities often used different terminology to describe them. The brand needed to simplify the story, create a shared vocabulary, and make the value of the service immediately clear.

Discovery uncovered a key insight. The utility was the product, not the purpose.

The real opportunity was helping rural communities remain viable for generations by enabling more thoughtful development.

Sustainable Viability for Rural Communities

Sustainable viability for rural communities

We positioned FMS around a simple purpose: to build sustainable viability for rural communities.

For developers, communal services create a faster, more affordable path to rural development. For residents, they enable growth without sacrificing nature or heritage. For municipalities, increased density can strengthen local economies and community infrastructure.

The fabric of rural communities

The identity translates that strategy into a visual idea rooted in place.

The symbol combines homes and landscape into a modular mark inspired by the existing fabric of rural villages and hamlets. Its forms can be repeated and rearranged to reflect different population densities, reinforcing the idea that new development should fit into a community rather than overwhelm it.

That same logic extends into a family of rural fabric patterns, creating a flexible graphic language that can grow, contract, and adapt across applications.

A natural but vibrant colour palette connects the brand to the Frontenac landscape, while bold condensed typography gives the system a distinctive, confident voice.

Built for what comes next

The identity system was designed to scale with FMS. Its flexible logo architecture and rural fabric patterns allow the brand to adapt across print and digital applications, while representing different communities and population densities without sacrificing recognition or consistency.

In its first year, FMS began development on projects in Verona, Sharbot Lake, and Marysville, demonstrating the potential of a new model for rural community development.

”Jon's ability to grasp new ideas and transform them into reality is nothing short of extraordinary. He took what was initially a decentralized water and wastewater utility and turned it into a dynamic and impactful vision, an emblem of rural community viability. The brand identity he created embodied our innovation and renewed our sense of purpose.
